How Do I Know If I Might Need A New Clutch?
Common signs that you might need a new clutch fitted include:
- changing gears is difficult
- There's rattling or grinding sound when you change gears
- You can rev the engine, but your car barely increases in speed
- Engine reves climb or fall seemingly at random .

How Do I Know If My Clutch Has Gone?
Take the car for a drive.
1. While driving down the road in 3rd gear, put the car in 2nd gear, then let out the clutch. If the RPMs of the engine don't immediately go up, it may be time to replace the clutch.
2. Another way to establish if your clutch needs repair is to test it in a parking lot. -
How Do You Check a Clutch?
Start your car (on a level road) put the clutch in, put the car into 3rd gear, take the handbrake off and slowly release the clutch. It should stall rapidly. If the engine labours for a bit as you let the clutch out, tries to pull away, then stalls, the clutch is slipping.
